How to monitor internet usage for an App

There are too many apps available in the Play store to monitor internet usage on your mobile device. If you are using Android 4 and above then there is an option named ‘Data Usage’ under Android system settings. If you don’t have this option or if you are using older version of Android, then you can always install apps from Play store. For those
who are using Android 4 and above, I recommend to use the inbuilt app than installing any third party app as the installed app might consume memory and might even slow down your device.
Follow the following steps to set data usage.
  • Go to Settings and tap on ‘Data usage’.
  • Enable ‘Mobile data’ and enable ‘Set mobile data limit’.
  • You can set Data usage cycle Ex: May 2nd – June 1st.
  • You can scroll the usage bar to set warning and limit. By doing this your device will automatically self monitor internet usage and on reaching limit, it will disconnect from internet or your mobile data plan.

As you can see in the above image, you can monitor internet usage for individual app like Internet browser, Facebook, Maps etc. Now tap on the individual app like Facebook or internet as shown above. This will show you all the details of data usage for an app, including the Foreground and Background data usage. You even have an option to view and change app settings. You can stop an app from using internet in the background when connected to mobile network, there by saving your data usage and money, but note that background data usage will start again once you are connected to WiFi. You can see in the above image that my data usage is very less even though I have a limit of 2GB. The reason is I connect to WiFi when i’m at home and at office. The data usage that you see above is only when I travel. Note that the above data usage graph doesn’t show your data usage using WiFi, it will only show your Mobile network data plan. Again, I recommend using this inbuilt feature on Android 4 and above to monitor internet usage which is accurate, simple and easy to use.
