How to export your Google Reader data

Google Reader will cease to exist after July 1. If you haven't migrated to another news reader yet, you only have a few days left before it's too late to export your data out of Google Reader.
If you're still hanging on to Google Reader, it's time to let it go. After Monday, Google Reader will no longer be available. People with only a few subscriptions will be able to migrate to another service without much hassle, but those with more than just a few will want the option to bulk-import the subscription data. Even if you don't move the data to a new service right away, it'll be nice to have for future reference.
To export your Google Reader data, follow the steps below:
Step 1: Go to Reader settings, then click on the Import/Export tab.
Step 2: Under "Export your information," click on the "Download your data through Takeout" link. You can also go to https://www.google.com/takeout/#custom:reader directly.
Step 3: Once Takeout shows 100 percent and provides an estimate of the number of files and size, click on the "Create archive" button.
Google Reader Create archive
Step 4: At the next screen, click on the Download button to download your Google Reader archive as a ZIP file.
Google Reader download archive
When you open the archive, you'll see several JavaScript files (JSON) and a "subscriptions.xml" file. The XML file contains your list of subscriptions and is what you'll import to your new news reader.

Keep in mind that some Google Reader alternatives, like Feedly and Digg Reader, don't support importing subscriptions -- at least not yet. If you think you'll want to try either of those services, you might want to use their Google Reader import options while you still can.

Getting started with Photoshop Express for Windows 8

Adobe's Photoshop Express, previously only available on iOS and Android, is now available for Windows 8. We'll show you how to get started with the app.
Adobe Photoshop Express for Windows 8

Previously only available for iOS and Android devices, it's now ready to be downloaded for free to your Windows 8 tablet or hybrid device from the Windows Store. Here's how to get started with Adobe Photoshop Express for Windows 8:Adobe's Photoshop Express is a basic photo-editing app for your mobile device. With Photoshop Express, you can correct photo properties like contrast, exposure, and white balance, or use the autofix feature to let Photoshop try to fix everything for you. You can also crop your photos, apply creative filters, and share them to Facebook directly from the app.

Opening a photo

When you first launch Photoshop Express, you'll be prompted to select an image source for editing. You can select a photo from your Pictures Library, take a photo from the device's camera, or pick a photo from Revel, Adobe's photo storage and synchronization service. If the photo you want to edit isn't stored in those locations, you can always browse to the photo with Windows Explorer, right-click on the photo, then go to Open with > Photoshop Express.

Editing a photo

Once you've opened up a photo, you'll see six editing choices on the lower left side: Crop, Correct, Looks, Red Eye, Auto Fix, and Reduce Noise. Just tap or click on any of those choices to edit your photo.

Crop lets you rotate, straighten or flip the photo, as well as crop with strict photo ratios.
Correct allows you to change the contrast, clarity, vibrance, exposure, highlights, shadows, temperature and tint. All of these enhancements work by moving the slider, which works very well on a touch screen. You can also choose to have the app correct the exposure and white balance automatically.

Looks contains 20 free Instagram-like filters. There are also 20 premium filters (Adobe Looks Pack) that you can buy for $2.99. You can try all the premium filters for free, but you'll have to buy the upgrade to save any changes.

Red Eye helps you remove red eye from photos, just by tapping on the problem area. If you have a touch screen, you can use zoom gestures to enlarge the photo to make it easier to select the red eye. If you decide you don't like the enhancement, you can tap on the undo button in the upper right-hand corner. The redo button is located there as well.
Auto Fix attempts to enhance the photo with a single tap. As with most of the enhancements you make with Photoshop Express, you can tap and hold on the View Diff or View Original button that appears on the lower right side to compare the edited version with the original.
Reduce Noise is another premium feature that tries to "smooth out unwanted grain and speckling." The Noise Reduction Pack costs $4.99 from the Windows Store.

Sharing a photo

You can share your photos to Revel or Facebook directly from Photoshop Express by tapping on the Save/Share button in the lower left-hand corner. You can also try using the Windows 8 share feature from the charms bar. If all else fails, you can always save the photo to your device, then share it the old-fashioned way.

Adobe Photoshop Express for Windows 8 should work well for most casual users and is particularly fun to use on Windows 8 devices with touch screens. Let us know what you think of it. Does it have enough features to meet most of your needs or do you require something more robust?

How to boot directly to the desktop in Windows 8.1

Windows 8.1 has some new features, including bypassing the Start screen at login, so you can go straight to the desktop. We'll show you how to enable it.
Windows 8.1 desktop
Windows 8.1 adds back the Start button and lets you boot directly to the desktop.

Step 1:
Right-click on the Windows 8.1 taskbar, then choose Properties. The Windows 8 Start screen is a good starting point for Windows 8 devices with touch screens, but on PCs with standard screens, you might prefer to boot directly to the desktop. Previously, you could bypass the Windows 8 Start screen with Start8, but Windows 8.1 now lets you do it natively. Here's how:
Step 2: Click on the Navigation tab, then under the Start screen section, check the box next to "Go to the desktop instead of Start when I sign in."

The next time you boot Windows 8.1, you'll go straight to the desktop without ever seeing the Start screen.

Download Windows RT Jailbreak Tool To Run Unsigned Apps

As we reported to you a few days ago, a group of software creators managed to bypass Windows RT’s restrictions and run unsigned desktop applications on the operating system, basically opening the door to a whole new world of jailbreaking tools.

Even though the whole process of jailbreaking Windows RT was pretty complicated, it was only a matter of time before someone came up with a dedicated solution supposed to perform this task all by itself.

Now XDA Developers user “netham45” has released a batch file that does the entire jailbreakingprocess automatically, so it modifies the Windows RT system kernel without user interaction.

Even though the software developer admits that some users might get a BSOD after launching the application, he says that everything should work just fine on all Windows RT tablets, including Microsoft’s Surface RT.

At this point, there are only a few software solutions available on a jailbroken Windows RT unit, including VNC Server and Client, Putty and Bochs, but many more apps are very likely to be added to the list as new users do the jailbreak.

Microsoft has already confirmed the jailbreak, saying that it “applauds the ingenuity” of the software developers behind the project, but also hinted that a future fix could block their attempts to modify the system kernel.

netham45 explained that Microsoft would have a very hard time trying to block their efforts. “They can patch it through Windows Update, but since we have the ability to reinstall from recovery partitions we can revert any Windows Updates they release,” he explained.

The jailbreak would only last until the Windows RT device is restarted and even though it may sound like a glitch, it’s actually a simple way to make sure that you won’t lose the warranty or get infected by some sort of virus compiled for the tablet-oriented operating system.
